Hello everyone!

I wanted to spread the word about a new radical feminist collective in the UCF community. femnomena meets at 4:30 on Fridays at the Gazebo. On the last Friday of the month we meet earlier at an agreed upon time, so that we can attend Orlando Critical Mass bike rides.

Our current major projects include fundraising for MADRE/OWFI for women in Iraq, ecofeminist actions spreading awareness about alternatives to tampons & pads (i.e. the Divacup, Lunapads, etc.), anti-Girls Gone Wild events as a response to their presence at local bars, and vegan brunches.

We are a non-hierarchical, horizontal, multi-issue organization. We want you & your creativity, passion and ideas at our meetings! We also want to work with other feminist organizations on campus toward our mutual goals & a better campus and community for all genders!

Hey NOWer's!!!

I want to thank everyone who came to the first meeting of the semester
last week!!! We had a great turn- out! Just to remind everyone NOW's
meetings are every Monday @ 6pm in the gazebo in front of the UCF
bookstore/ Cafe. To all who couldn't make it last week, we hope to see
you there this Monday along with the new faces of NOW! Here's the
meeting minutes from last week:

* We are going to try to table every week- so for those who are
interested, it would be great to get some support! Just send me your
availability and we can work it out.

* We spoke about possibly having a women's bonding event. There seems
to be a lack of solidarity within the feminist community. Some ideas
were having another Dinner Party or maybe a "slumber party" of some
sort.

*Sidestreet Protesting- where we would stand on one of the major
corners (University & Alafaya) and wave signs in favor of CHOICE,
reproductive freedom, and Women's Rights

*Event: "Make- out, Speak- out" In regards to PDA (Public Display of
Affection): someone brought up a great point that when homosexual
couples display PDA it is more frowned upon than heterosexual couples.
We were thinking about all types of couples gathering in the Student
Union (lesbian, gay, straight) and "at the sound of the tone" everyone
starts to kiss!!! I think this tactic is a great idea. I would love to
hear some feedback.

*Event: To advertise the diva cup and luna pads. These are
alternative's to tampons and pads. They are eco friendly. More about
this event. We were thinking of an event to kind of express that
women's periods are nothing to be ashamed of.

*On March 4th, NOW along with the UCF's Women's Studies program are
bringing in Amy Richards and Jennifer Baumgardner authors of
"Manifesta" and "Grassroots" to UCF!!!! We are super stoked about
this. They will be speaking about Feminism and Activism, with a focus
of solidarity and sisterhood!! More information to come soon!!!

NOW's really excited about this semester and we are looking forward to
new ideas and bringing back solidarity within the community!
I hope to see everyone at the meeting (Mondays @ 6 pm in the gazebo).

SOAR is the official local host for the community presentation of The Vagina Monologues. We are having a meeting on Tuesday, November 27 at SOAR's office for anyone interested in participating in the event.

This year Eve Ensler is allowing 3 different productions to take place from January to April: The Vagina Monologues; A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer; and Until the Violence Stops. Each production is allowed 2 performances. SOAR has signed up to do all 3. We will be showing "Until the Violence Stops" in January, followed by "The Vagina Monologues" in February, and finishing with "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer" in March (this monologue includes readings from males..hence the actors!).

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM

Beginning November 25 and ending December 10, Women's Studies Programs across the nation celebrate 16 days of activism.

Thanks to Amanda Boulton, one of Dr. Logan's WST3015 students, we have a beautiful activism calendar. On each of the sixteen days, we will post Amanda's calendar activities for activism. Please follow her suggestions, share them, and engage in activism.

We begin with Amanda's calendar introduction: "From November 25 through December 10, the Women's Studies Program will participate in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign. Started in 1991 by the first Women's Global Leadership Institute at Rutgers University, the 16 Days Campaign is an international effort to eliminate all forms of violence against women. The 16-day period connects International Day Against Violence Against Women with International Human Rights Day (to symbolically link violence against women and/as human rights), while also including both World AIDS Day and the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. Participants from around the world engage in various forms of activism, from marches to letter-writing campaigns, public lectures, educational workshops, and film screenings as a way to raise awareness about violence against women. For more information on the 16 Days Campaign, please visit http://www.cwgl.rutgers.edu/16days/about.html." Please follow the activism suggestions for each day, beginning November 25.

In this class, students will read a wide range of texts written on “womanism” and discuss the various ways in which the term has been defined and/or employed. With an emphasis on student discussion and debate, we will examine and critique Womanist Studies by placing it into dialogue with Black feminism, Chicana feminism and other feminist theories in an effort to determine its theoretical and organizational merits and deficits in addressing the oppression of Black women and Women of Color in the United States.

VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood

Hello everyone! I would like to introduce you all to VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood. We believe in the fundamental right of every individual to manage his or her fertility. VOX supports full access to comprehensive reproductive and complementary health care services in settings that preserve and protect the essential privacy and rights of each individual; advocates public policies that guarantee these rights and ensure access to such services; and supports access to medically accurate educational programs that enhance understanding of human sexuality. Our mission is to educate the university community about reproductive health and rights, to translate increased awareness into pro-choice activism on campus, and to serve as a coalition partner to state, national, and international reproductive rights efforts.

We have many events and activist goals here at UCF. For the sake of this post being so long, I will include more information about our past events in a future post. I just wanted to introduce everyone to VOX UCF and what we do and what we wish to accomplish.

We will be having meetings on Mondays at 5pm in Communications 147, as necessary. Please contact us at voxucf@gmail.com for more information and to join the mailing list.

Our next planned event will be to dispense goodie bags in conjunction with Halloween. The bags will contain condoms, educational information, and much more! More details will be coming soon. We will be distributing the bags on October 23-25 outside of the student union. We will be stuffing the bags on October 14 at a member's house.
